Texas State Capitol Store

Austin, Texas

Located in the Capitol Extension, the Texas State Capitol Store has served visiting tourists, State legislators and State employees working in the capitol building since the opening of the extension in 1993.

It provides a wide range of Texas-related products from children’s toys and tee shirts to historically inspired products. We were asked by the State Preservation Board to fully renovate the store to better suit its position of prominence in the Capitol building as well as to improve its functionality and flexibility to accommodate its expanding product range. The complete renovation added square footage to the store’s footprint which made space for a space dedicated to the newly developed “Capitol Legacy” collection, created to showcase products developed specifically to commemorate the historic 1888 Capitol Building.

Ravinia Music Festival

Highland Park, Illinois

Opened in 1904, Ravinia Festival is the oldest outdoor music festival in North America and attracts about 600,000 visitors to between 120 to 150 events spanning all musical genres during their three-month season each summer.

Ravinia is in the design stages of adding an experience center facility and fully renovating the dining pavilion which houses the Ravinia Shop. Operated by the Ravinia Women’s Board, shop proceeds help support Ravinia Festival’s enhancement of the “park experience,” scholarships at Steans Institute for Young Artists, and the REACH-TEACH-PLAY education programs in Chicago-area schools. Our goal for our new shop design is to heighten the visibility of the shop, enhance the display of an expanded product mix and improve and simplify the effort required to operate the store. Attendance numbers for shows throughout the season vary widely. Sold out concerts happen several times each season and can potentially have 15,000 concert goers in the park, all of whom may at some point visit the shop. The range of visitor attendance is a challenge and demands the shop be an adaptable and flexible store, capable of adapting to this reality while still projecting a unique and personal shopping experience.

Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

Fort Worth, Texas

“Shop Too!” is an innovative 3,000 sq.ft. Fort Worth Museum of Science and History museum store designed in association with doyle + associates.

It is part of the new $80 million, 170,000 sq. ft. Fort Worth Museum of Science and History designed by Mexican architects Legorreta + Legorreta located in the city’s long established cultural district. Shop Too! was designed to seamlessly fit within the overall museum’s strong design language while at the same time establishing its own personality and identity. Through the installation of “Bumper the Bumpersaurus”, the iconic dinosaur slide fabricated from recycled industrial bits and pieces, the space not only attracts the museum visitor’s attention, but creates a character for identity products and creates an exciting interactive and visual experience that keeps the guests coming back.

Grounds for Sculpture

Hamilton, New Jersey

The Grounds for Sculpture is a 42-acre public sculpture park located in Hamilton, NJ.

Since opening in 1992, it has presented visitors with an evolving, permanent outdoor collection, seasonal exhibitions, and educational programs designed to facilitate the understanding of and appreciation for contemporary sculpture.

For the store located within the Grounds for Sculpture’s new Visitor Center. I provided a full range of retail consulting services including complete design, documentation and construction supervision for this all new, 1500 sq. ft. space. Scope also included new retail storage facilities, an evaluation of the existing operations, and working with retail consultant doyle + associates the development of strategies for improved store performance, merchandising and custom product development.

Taliesin West

Scottsdale, Arizona

Taliesin West is a National Historic Landmark built between 1937 and 1959 and is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

The Taliesin West Bookstore offers a collection of books, gifts, apparel and decorative accessories inspired by the architecture and graphic designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Working with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and retail consultant doyle + associates, we evaluated the existing bookstore’s current facility and developed both short term and long term recommendations and strategies to better align the store in supporting the Foundation’s mission. By doing this, we achieved the Foundation’s goals of enhancing the visitor’s experience to Taliesin West with a limited budget and using Opto store fixtures, minimizing the renovation impact on operations, optimizing revenue potential and improving operational functions.

Bullock Texas State History Museum

Austin, Texas

Opened in 2001, the Bullock Texas State History Museum explores the story of 4000 years of Texas history.

The museum has been undergoing a refresh with the final component being the full redesign and renovation of the museum’s store. Operated by the State Preservation Board, it was determined that the Bullock store was actually too large for the numbers of museum visitors and long overdue for a redesign. Part of our directive for the renovation design was to resize the store footprint to a size more appropriate to its sales and visitor numbers. We also took this opportunity to address its challenging height and geometry and regularized its plan to make it easier to manage for its staff and easier and more engaging to shop by the museum visitor. This project has been fully designed and documented and is awaiting the determination of a final construction start date.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture serves as a vibrant institution that inspires passion for learning, creativity, volunteerism and cross-cultural engagement.

The main retail store for the Center is a 3,200 s.f. space offering merchandise that complements the Center is dedicated to highlighting Arab and Saudi heritage as well as the diversity of cultures worldwide. Located off the central entry plaza, the store establishes a prominent presence amidst the chaos of ticketing and crowds of tour groups. Large scale, continuously changing LED images based on the themes of world cultures provides a vibrant billboard for the store. The interior space is clean and contemporary drawing on a material pallet of natural and manmade materials. The large frieze running along the interior of the space speaks to the store’s mission through the use of the unique yet familiar nature of patterns and textiles found throughout the world and historic scenes of the Kingdom and of the beginnings of the development of the oil industry around the site of the Center.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

As part of the core project component of the $228 million, museum-wide redesign by Frank Gehry for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum was compelled to rethink its existing retail space.

The phasing of the new master plan impacted the existing store’s location in its early stages and quickly downsized the store by a third of its original square footage. The museum asked us to develop both short and long term recommendations and strategies for this transition and to update and refresh the current store to serve as its only retail space during the duration of the renovations. We worked together with the Museum’s retail and facilities teams to ensure that the resultant redesign remained operational and profitable throughout all of the subsequent stages of the recently completed, extensive overall Frank Gehry project.
